Synopsis

The Last Sailors… leftovers from the great age of sail. They are Brazilians, sailing log rafts many miles out to sea for a few kilos of fish, Indians on windjammers who still sail before the mast, Egyptians piloting barges on the Blue Nile, they are also from Sri Lanka… Indonesians… Chileans… and Chinese… all members of an endangered species, a vanishing breed who will soon die out. During a two years journey, 25.000 miles crossing the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Indic, Neil Hollander and Harald Mertes filmed an endangered race of sailors and sailing boats. This mans, fighting against the wind and the sea to obtain their sustenance, are remains of traditional ways of live left back by the wave of technology. The authors capture the spirit of an era with fascinating and evocative images.
